In the context of agriculture, diversification can be considered as reallocation of some productive resources of an agricultural business, such as land, capital, agricultural equipment and labor for other products and, especially in rich countries, for non-agricultural activities such as restaurants and the shops.

Agricultural diversification involves the movement in resources from a mixture of low value commodities to a mixture of high value commodities. It focuses mainly on the meaning of horticulture, milk, poultry and fisheries.

While most definitions of diversification in developing countries assume that diversification mainly involves replacing one crop or other agricultural product for another, or increasing the number of companies, or activities, carried out by certain agriculture, the definition is used in developed countries sometimes. sometimes more related to the development of activities on agriculture that do not involve agricultural production.

For example, a section of the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) defines diversification as "the entrepreneurial use of agricultural resources for non-agricultural purposes for commercial gain". Using this definition DEFRA found that 56% of agriculture in the UK had diversified in 2003.

Most diversification activities only involve renting agricultural buildings for non-agricultural use, but 9% of agriculture has been involved in processing or retailing, 3% with the provision of tourism or catering accommodation, and 7% with sports or recreational activities. Others adopt a broader definition, which can include developing new marketing opportunities.

Agricultural diversification is an important mechanism for economic growth. However, it depends on opportunities for diversification and on farmers' responses to those opportunities. Agricultural diversification can be facilitated by technological breakthroughs, by changes in consumer demand or in government policies or in trade arrangements, and developments in the meaning of irrigation systems, roads and other infrastructure.


Definition of Agricultural Diversification

Agricultural diversification is a complex and broad endeavor to improve the agricultural economy through diversification of commodities in the production, consumption and distribution subsystems at the level of regional and national farming.


Agricultural diversification is the next traditional stage in transforming agriculture into a dynamic commercial sector. Diversification in the agricultural product mix, through a shift towards high value products, has great potential to accelerate the growth rate in production.


Agricultural diversification is measured in several ways throughout the world. For example, one such measure is the maximum proportion index, which is "defined as the ratio (proportion) of the farm's main activities to the total activities".


On the contrary, this can be hampered by risks in markets and prices and in crop management practices, by the degradation of natural resources, and by conflicting socio-economic requirements - perhaps for job creation, or for independence or the ability to generate foreign exchange in particular plants or livestock or fisheries or forest products.
